Verdict
The Coinbase Card is a Visa debit card that spends straight from your Coinbase balance. It suits existing Coinbase customers in the US (every state except Hawaii) or the UK who want to spend crypto or cash at Visa merchants without first moving money into a separate app. The model is custodial: Coinbase holds your funds and automatically converts crypto to US Dollars — Pound Sterling in the UK — at the moment you pay. If self-custody matters to you, this is not that card.
The economics are straightforward. There is no application fee, the virtual card is free to create and hold, and Coinbase does not publish an annual fee. Spending US Dollars or USDC carries no Coinbase fees, but a spread applies whenever you spend other crypto. Rewards exist, but they are US-only and paid at a variable rate Coinbase does not publish — so treat them as a bonus, not the reason to apply.
Rewards: real, but US-only and unpublished
Rewards are an optional Coinbase offer available only to Card users in the US; UK cardholders earn nothing. The rate is variable — Coinbase advertises no fixed percentage and directs users to check the app for the current rate, so there is no headline number to quote. You choose which cryptocurrency to earn from Coinbase’s list of eligible currencies during the application, and can change it later; the more you spend, the more you accumulate.
- US only — the rewards program does not reach UK cardholders.
- Variable rate, shown in-app; no fixed public figure.
- Paid in a crypto you choose and can switch.
Fees and the spread
There is no application fee and no credit check. The virtual card is free to create and hold, and Coinbase does not publish a separate annual fee. In the US, there are no Coinbase fees for spending US Dollars or USDC. The catch is other crypto: a spread applies when Coinbase buys, sells, or converts your cryptocurrency to fund a purchase — a cost baked into the rate rather than a line-item fee.
Tax matters too. Spending US Dollars or USDC generally has no tax implications, because they track the dollar 1:1. Spending any other crypto is a sale of assets and a taxable event. For frequent spenders, that alone is a reason to fund with USDC.
Custody and who holds the money
This is a custodial product. You are not holding your own keys at the point of sale; the card draws on your Coinbase account and Coinbase converts crypto to fiat when you pay. The US program is issued by Pathward, N.A.; the UK program is issued by Paysafe Financial Services Limited, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 900015). Both run on Visa and are accepted anywhere Visa debit is. Only one active card is allowed per account.
Availability and getting one
There are two programs. US residents in every state except Hawaii need an active Coinbase account and must pass identity verification — Coinbase may ask for your Social Security number, W-2, and other documents. UK residents are covered too: the card is available to all Coinbase customers who live in the UK. Once approved, you can use the virtual card immediately; a physical card arrives in 2-3 weeks.
Who it is for
Get it if you already keep a balance on Coinbase, live in the US (excluding Hawaii) or the UK, and want a simple way to spend it at Visa merchants — especially if you spend USDC or dollars, where it is fee-free and tax-neutral. US users get variable spending rewards on top.
Skip it if you want self-custody, a fixed and advertised rewards rate, or you live outside the US and UK — or in Hawaii. UK users chasing rewards in particular should look elsewhere, because the rewards program does not reach them.
