Verdict

The MetaMask Card is a self-custodial crypto debit card on the Mastercard network, for people who already hold funds in a MetaMask wallet and want to spend them directly. Your crypto stays in your own wallet until the second you pay, then converts to local currency at checkout. It suits existing MetaMask users in a supported country who want everyday spending without first moving funds to an exchange.

Headline terms: 1% mUSD back on the free Virtual card, or 3% mUSD back on the $199/year Metal card, with self-custody until payment. Two catches up front — new US and UK sign-ups are temporarily closed, and Metal-card orders are temporarily paused, so new users currently receive only the Virtual card.

Rewards, and the real conditions

The advertised 3% mUSD back is Metal-tier only — the tier that costs $199/year — and it applies only to the first $10,000 spent each year, dropping to 1% thereafter. Metal orders are currently paused, and MetaMask’s support notes mean the 3% rate is not attainable for new UK customers. The free Virtual card earns 1% mUSD back on all eligible transactions.

Both tiers pay rewards in mUSD (MetaMask’s USD stablecoin), auto-deposited to your Money Account. One caveat the headline rate skips: you must pay a small gas fee to claim or redeem your mUSD back.

Fees

The Virtual card has no annual or maintenance fee; the Metal card costs $199/year. Individual transactions carry a fee, viewable in-app, and ATM and cross-border fees still apply per the fee schedule. On currency conversion the terms are good: no foreign transaction fees on either the Virtual or Metal card, passing the best foreign-exchange rate allowed by Mastercard with no additional MetaMask fee.

Custody, tokens and who holds your money

Custody is the core pitch: the card is self-custodial, so funds stay in your own MetaMask wallet and you keep control until the moment you pay — rather than pre-loading a balance held by a third party. Behind the card, Baanx is the provider, Monovate is the card issuer, and Mastercard operates the payment network.

You can spend six named tokens — mUSD, wETH, EURe, GBPe, USDC and USDT (the FAQ says “nine tokens” but lists six), across the Linea, Solana, Monad and Base networks, converting to local currency at checkout. Pay in store via Apple Pay or Google Pay. Only one MetaMask Card is allowed per user; the Metal card is that same card upgraded, not a second one.

Availability — who can actually get it

Sign-ups are open in 45 listed countries and territories — much of Europe (including EEA microstates and Crown dependencies), Canada, and parts of Latin America, among them Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. But new US and UK sign-ups are temporarily closed; existing UK cardholders are unaffected and can keep using their cards. MetaMask does not publish a date for the pause.

US availability is unclear from MetaMask’s own materials, which are contradictory — the product page markets the Metal card as available in the US while the FAQ says US sign-ups are closed — so no clean yes/no can be stated; what is verified is that new US sign-ups are paused. In New York and Texas, spending is limited to Linea and Base — Solana and Monad are not supported. Once approved, the Virtual card activates instantly, with no credit check.

Who it is for

Get it if you live in a supported country, already use MetaMask, and want to spend crypto straight from self-custody with no foreign-transaction fee. The free Virtual card’s 1% mUSD back is a fair everyday return, and the $199/year Metal tier’s 3% (on the first $10,000) can pay off for heavy spenders once Metal orders reopen.

Skip it if you are a new user in the US or UK — you cannot sign up right now — or if you want a physical metal card today, since orders are paused. It is also a poor fit if you would rather not pay gas to claim rewards or be paid in a stablecoin, or if you simply want a high, un-gated flat-rate cashback card.
